A Father Found His Son Locked In A Basement After A Birthday Party-olweny

Blue frosting was still smeared across Megan’s fingers when she said it.

“Your son was acting sick to ruin Matthew’s party, so I locked him in the basement for a while.”

For one second, the whole kitchen seemed to disappear around me.

Not physically.

The plastic cups were still on the counter.

The paper plates were still sagging under leftover cake.

The balloons were still dragging their ribbons across the cabinet handles every time the heat kicked on.

But the sound went out of the room in a way I had never felt before.

The sticky smell of sugar and warm soda hung in the air, and from the end of the hallway came a thin ribbon of cold that did not belong in a house where children had just been singing over birthday candles.

My wife, Sarah, was behind me with her coat still zipped to her chin.

She was not looking at Megan.

She was looking for Ethan.

Our son was eight years old.

Three hours earlier, he had been standing in our driveway with his backpack on, trying to convince both of us that his stomachache was not a big deal.

January air had turned the tip of his nose pink.

His hand was pressed against his belly.

His sneakers kept scraping at the concrete like he was nervous and excited at the same time.

“You sure, buddy?” I asked.

He nodded too fast.

“I’m fine, Dad. I just want to see Matthew.”

Matthew was Megan’s son.

He was Ethan’s cousin, classmate, and best friend whenever the two of them were not arguing over whose turn it was on the controller.

They went to the same elementary school.

They traded snacks at lunch.

They fought over little-boy things and forgave each other before recess was over.

So when Ethan said he wanted to go, Sarah and I believed him.

We had known Megan our whole lives, obviously.

She was my sister.

She had held Ethan when he was a baby.

She had sat at our kitchen table drinking coffee while Sarah packed his kindergarten lunch.

She had been on the emergency pickup list for school because I trusted her with my child in the same automatic way people trust family before family gives them a reason not to.

That trust was the worst part.

Not the loudest part.

The worst.
