A Doctor Saw the Bruises Behind Her Broken Arm and Called Police-Neyney

The first lie Laura told at the General Hospital of Puebla was small enough to fit on one line of a form.

Valeria did not cry at the reception desk.

She had already learned that crying made adults impatient, and impatience in their house could become something sharp.

The lobby smelled like disinfectant, wet coats, old coffee, and the metal tang of blood from the cut inside her lip.

A nurse asked Laura what happened, and Laura gave the answer Ernesto had ordered before they left the house.

“She fell down the stairs.”

Valeria repeated it because she knew the price of getting a sentence wrong.

“I only fell down the stairs.”

“She is very distracted,” Laura said.

“She is always fighting outside.”

Valeria lowered her eyes.

It was not the first time her mother had made violence sound like personality.

Before Ernesto, their house had been poor but not always frightened.

Valeria remembered her real father in pieces: a hand wiping dust off his work boots at the door, a laugh that filled the kitchen, a red cap hanging on a nail by the sink.
