Joanna Miller reached Mercy Creek Medical before the morning rush had fully gathered in the lobby.

The sky outside was the flat gray of a cold Tuesday, and rain clung to the sleeves of her faded blue sweater.

The automatic doors opened with a breath of warm air that smelled like sanitizer, burnt coffee, and damp winter coats.

For a moment, she stood there and listened to the soft chaos of the hospital.

A phone rang behind the intake desk.

A child coughed somewhere near the waiting-room chairs.

A volunteer pushed a cart of paper cups past a small American flag near reception.

Everybody seemed to have someone beside them.

Joanna had no one.

The nurse behind the intake desk looked up with kind eyes and a pen already in her hand.

“Looks like somebody is ready,” she said gently.

Joanna tried to smile.

The nurse glanced past her toward the doors.

“Is your husband parking the car?”

There are lies people tell to protect themselves from embarrassment, and there are lies people tell because the truth feels too heavy to lift in public.

Joanna told the second kind.

“Yes,” she said. “He should be here soon.”

The nurse nodded and slid the clipboard across the desk.

Joanna wrote her name on the hospital intake form with fingers that did not feel entirely like hers.
