The parking lot at Naval Station Norfolk looked like dull steel that Tuesday morning.

Rain had stopped before sunrise, but the pavement still shone under the gray January light, and the cold had a mean way of crawling through seams in a coat.

My coffee lid had leaked on my glove.

That should not have mattered.

It mattered because I was already late.

Three minutes late, to be exact, which sounded small unless you worked under Commander Reyes and had already seen her look at her watch the week before.

She had not said anything that day.

She had not needed to.

Some people yell.

Commander Reyes had mastered the kind of silence that made you reorganize your entire life by lunch.

So I walked fast across the lot with my badge bouncing against my chest, a folder under one arm, and cold air burning the inside of my nose.

The visitor processing center was ahead, all glass doors and fluorescent light, and even from outside it looked like it smelled of wet wool, floor cleaner, and old paper.

Then I saw him.

He was standing at the service window in a faded Navy veteran cap with the brim bent from years of use.

His jacket was covered in patches.

Some were sun-bleached.

Some had been sewn on crooked, like whoever stitched them cared more about memory than straight lines.

He held a manila folder against his chest with both hands.

Not the way people hold paperwork.

The way people hold something they have had to defend.

Behind the glass, a young petty officer leaned toward the speaker slot and raised his voice.

I could not hear the exact words from where I stood.

I could see the shape of them.
