The first thing Michael noticed was the smell.

Lemon dish soap, old cooking oil, and the damp sponge his mother always left by the faucet.

The second thing was the sound.

A plate scraping porcelain.

A doll clicking against the kitchen table while two little girls laughed.

Then his mother’s voice cut through all of it.

“Scrub it right, useless girl. You’re not even good enough for that.”

Michael stood in the open back doorway of his parents’ suburban split-level and felt the whole room rearrange itself in front of him.

His six-year-old daughter, Emma, was standing on a wooden crate at the sink.

Her sleeves were soaked to the elbows.

Her hands were buried in gray dishwater.

A dinner plate too large for her grip was tipped against her wrist, and soap bubbles clung to one cheek where she had tried to wipe away tears with wet fingers.

At the table, Olivia and Megan sat with new dolls.

Olivia was seven.

Megan was five.

They were Michael’s nieces, Jessica’s daughters, and they looked comfortable in that kitchen in a way Emma never had.

Emma’s purple backpack sat near the pantry, still zipped.

The animal crackers she had packed to share were still inside.

So was the folded drawing she had made for Grandma.

For half a second, Michael did nothing.

That was the part he hated later.

His body stood still while his mind tried to catch up with what his eyes already knew.
