I was still wearing my uniform when I left Fort Liberty that evening.

My black dress jacket was pressed so sharply it looked almost untouched by the long day behind me.

The ribbons and medals on my chest caught the fading light every time I passed under a streetlamp.

The only thing that mattered was the call I had received twenty-eight minutes earlier from a nurse at Mercy General Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Are you Emily Hart’s mother?” she had asked.

There are questions that tell you the answer before anyone says another word.

I pulled my SUV onto the road before she finished explaining.

The drive blurred through traffic, headlights, and the bitter smell of old coffee cooling in the cup holder.

I remember the paper sleeve on that coffee cup had gone soft from condensation.

I remember my hands on the steering wheel.

I remember thinking I had commanded rooms full of frightened people, but nothing had ever frightened me like the nurse’s careful voice.

When I reached the emergency entrance, the sliding doors opened on a rush of cold air and disinfectant.

A small American flag stood in a plastic holder near the hospital intake desk.

A television murmured in the waiting room, too cheerful for the people sitting beneath it.

A little boy coughed into his mother’s sleeve.

Somebody’s paper coffee cup tipped over near the vending machine and nobody moved to pick it up.

I went straight for the doors leading back to patient rooms.

A nurse stepped in front of me with a clipboard held across her chest.

“Ma’am, you can’t go back there.”

“My daughter,” I said. “Emily Hart. Where is she?”
