At 11:47 p.m., Colonel Valeria Salazar’s phone rang against the metal edge of her desk.

The office was quiet enough for the buzz to sound violent.

Old coffee sat in a paper cup by her elbow, the floor smelled faintly of wax, and dust from the training yard still clung to the seams of her boots.

She saw Camila’s name and answered before the second ring.

Valeria stood up.

“Where are you?”

“They locked me in,” Camila said. “They hit me.”

Then a hard thud cracked through the phone.

Valeria had spent too many years around emergencies to confuse silence after impact with uncertainty.

She grabbed her keys, left the state National Guard base in uniform, and walked past two younger officers who stepped aside before she said a word.

“My daughter is in danger,” she said.

He opened the gate.
