Nine-year-old Caleb Miller had been told many times not to ask about the back bedroom.

Not when the door was closed.

Not when his father walked down the hallway at night.

Not when his mother stood in the kitchen with one hand wrapped around her coffee mug and the other pressed flat against the counter like she was holding herself upright.

In the Miller house, some rules were spoken once and then kept forever.

Caleb was good at rules.

He put his backpack by the front door every afternoon.

He rinsed his cereal bowl before school.

He turned off cartoons when his mother said his father needed quiet.

He did not open the back bedroom door.

He did not even touch the knob.

But on that Thursday night in Akron, Ohio, the storm made the whole house sound awake.

Rain slapped against the windows.

The gutters rattled.

Every few minutes, thunder rolled over the roof with a heavy sound that made the glass in Caleb’s room tremble.

He was supposed to be asleep.

His mother had tucked him in just after 9:30 p.m., pulled the blanket to his chin, and told him not to get up again.

Her voice had been soft, but her eyes had gone to the hallway before she left.
