“They said it only hurts the first time,” a little girl whispered to 911. What the authorities found inside that quiet house was far worse than they had imagined.

The call came in at 2:17 p.m. on a gray Tuesday afternoon, when rain was tapping the emergency dispatch center windows in Cedar Ridge, Illinois, and the room smelled of burnt coffee, printer toner, and wet coats hanging too close to the heater.

The dispatcher had answered thousands of calls before that one.
