The thing I remember most about that Thanksgiving is not the turkey.

It is not the candles under my mother’s chandelier.

It is not even the way my father’s hand felt when it closed around my throat.

It is the sound Tyler made when he hit the dining room floor.

He was eight years old.

That morning, he had stood in the bathroom in his navy sweater while his sister Megan tried to smooth his hair with a wet comb.

“Do I look nice?” he asked me.

He cared because it was Thanksgiving, and because children still believe grown-ups mean it when they say family matters.

“You look handsome,” I told him.

Megan rolled her eyes in the mirror, but she smiled while she did it.

She was ten, already older in the eyes than I wanted her to be, already too good at noticing when adults were about to ruin a room.

I remember the light in our bathroom, pale and clean, landing on both their faces.

I remember thinking my little colonial needed new gutters, the front step had a crack, and the kitchen cabinets were old, but at least it was ours.

My parents lived twenty minutes away in a house that looked warm from the street.

Porch lights.

Trimmed shrubs.

Cars lined neatly at the curb.

A small American flag near the front door, because my mother liked things that suggested decency from a distance.

Inside, the dining room smelled like butter, cinnamon, turkey skin, beer, and perfume.

The white tablecloth was pressed.

The silverware was polished.

The crystal glasses caught the chandelier light and threw little pieces of gold across the wall.
