Outside the sliding door, the backyard still held the party that had been canceled without her consent.

Ten folding chairs faced nothing.

The string lights blinked and tapped softly against the fence.

The paper tablecloth on the patio table lifted with every small breath of wind, then fell back down like it was tired.

Avery had spent the whole afternoon turning that backyard into something that looked loved.

She had wiped the chairs.

She had carried the little folding table outside by herself.

She had checked the candles twice, then once more, because eighteen felt too large to trust to chance.

She had paid for the cake with money she had saved from small jobs and careful choices.

She had made the cookies from ingredients she bought herself.

She had chosen chocolate chip because Miranda hated oatmeal, and Avery had learned years ago that preventing Miranda from being annoyed was treated like a family duty.

That was the part nobody thanked her for.

They thanked quiet by asking for more of it.
