Janelle didn’t move right away.

She looked at the blue church envelope in her hand, then at my phone, where Paige was still whispering my name like the walls had ears.

“Erin,” Paige said through the phone, “tell me you did not sign something with Mom.”

I walked to the door before I could talk myself out of it. My legs felt weak, but my hand was steady when I turned the lock.

My mother stood in the hallway.

Not Paige. Not some stranger. My mother.

Her hair was pulled back wrong, like she had done it in a hurry. She had no coat, even though the morning air coming through the stairwell was cold. In one hand, she held a manila folder. In the other, she held the mortgage statement I had helped her hide for almost two years.

Behind her stood Paige, pale and furious, with both boys pressed against her legs.

My mother looked past me at Janelle.

“Give me the envelope,” she said.

That was how the knock ended.

Not with an apology.

With a demand.

I didn’t step aside.

Janelle did not give her the envelope.

My phone was still connected to Paige’s call, but Paige was now standing five feet from me in the hallway, holding her own phone like she had forgotten what it was for.

“Mom,” I said, “why are you here?”

My mother’s mouth tightened.

“Because your sister found something she had no business opening.”

Paige made a sound that wasn’t quite a laugh.

“No business?” she said. “The mortgage portal was open on the kitchen computer. It said Erin’s account. Erin’s payments. Erin’s email.”
