My name is Erin Callahan, and for fifteen years my family told the world a smaller story about me because the real one made them uncomfortable.

They did not say I was dead.

That would have required grief.

They said I had drifted.

They said I had never finished anything.

They said I had gone overseas and become hard to explain.

The first thing I noticed was the smell.

Warm dust in the hallway carpet.

The second thing I noticed was the sound of the porch swing still creaking in the afternoon wind, the same slow squeal it had made when I was sixteen and waiting for college acceptance letters by the mailbox.

A small American flag snapped beside that mailbox, bright against the yard, while my father opened the front door and looked at me like I was a problem that had arrived without calling first.

“You’re still alive,” he said.

No hug.

I stood there with my duffel strap cutting into my palm and understood that the house had not been waiting for me.
