The gym smelled like floor polish and supermarket flowers.

The smell came first.

Floor wax, warm paper programs, plastic-wrapped bouquets from the grocery store, and the faint damp heat of too many bodies packed into a high school gym in June.

Parents fanned themselves with folded programs.

A grandmother in the front section was already crying before the orchestra kids finished tuning.

One violin kept squeaking the same note, sharp and nervous, over and over.

Beside me, my best friend Claire leaned close and whispered, “You okay?”
