The first knock did not scare Gabriel Townsend.

That surprised her.

For most of her life, her father’s knock had been enough to make her move.

She had opened doors for him at holidays, office meetings, hospital visits, late-night conversations, and all the small emergencies that seemed to matter only when he needed her to be convenient.

But that night, just after midnight, she stood inside her apartment with rain sliding down the front window and did not reach for the lock.

On the kitchen table behind her lay a trust folder with her mother’s name stamped on the inside page.

On the porch outside stood the two people who had just watched her be removed from a hotel ballroom.

Her father knocked again.

“Gabby,” he called through the door.

The old version of her would have opened it before he had to ask twice.

The old version of her would have worried about the neighbors, the rain, Vivian’s dress, Dad’s embarrassment, the public mess, the family name, the hotel reputation, and every other thing people had taught her to protect before herself.

That version of her had walked out of the gala earlier that evening with her chin up and her throat burning.

She had not died on the way home.

That mattered.

The gala had begun with gold lettering and polite lies.

Gabriel had arrived a little after eight, carrying her coat over one arm because the rain had come sideways across the parking lot.

The hotel looked exactly the way it always did for a major donor event, all polished brass, tall windows, heavy floral arrangements, and staff moving quickly without looking rushed.

Her father’s name was everywhere.

The program in the lobby carried it.

The welcome placard carried it.

The little cards at the tables carried it.

Her mother’s name was nowhere.

That absence had followed Gabriel across the marble floor like a second shadow.
