The first thing Claire saw that Sunday was not Tara’s smile.

It was the white mortgage folder lying across her mother’s dining table like it owned the room.

Jason had brought it in under one arm, careful and proud, the way people carry something expensive before it is actually theirs.

He spread the floor plans between the casserole dish and the coffee mugs, smoothing the corners with both palms while their mother tried to make brunch feel normal around him.

The house had a wraparound porch, a finished basement, and the huge kitchen island Jason kept talking about as if it would fix every uncomfortable thing in the family.

Tara stood beside him with her hand on his arm.

She had that polished expression Claire had learned to recognize since the engagement, soft enough for witnesses, sharp enough for the person she meant to cut.

Her phone stayed in her other hand.

Every few minutes, Tara glanced at it, then at Claire, then back at Jason’s printed dream.

Claire had not planned to start anything.

For months, she had been doing the same small family arithmetic everybody else expected from her.

Their mother had asked Claire to help them get settled.

Jason had called it temporary.

Tara had acted as if accepting Claire’s help was somehow proof that Claire was needy for offering it.

So when Jason pointed at the kitchen island again and said closing was basically done, Claire set down her coffee.
