It was supposed to be one of those perfect ceremonies, the kind families photograph from every angle because they need proof that all the hard years turned into something beautiful.

I had imagined that part more times than I wanted to admit.

I had imagined walking across the stage.

I had imagined the white coat.

I had imagined hearing my name with the title I had chased through exhaustion, loans, exams, rejection emails, and hospital rotations where I learned to smile even when my feet were numb.

I had not imagined my mother whispering that I owed her the moment.

But that was Karen.

She had always known how to take a room that belonged to someone else and stand in the center of it as if the lights had been hung for her.

Thomas sat beside her with the program folded over his knee.

He wore the same careful expression he wore in every family photo, that mild, polite look that made strangers assume he was gentle.

My sister Megan sat on Karen’s other side, phone lifted, recording like she had been told to record.

They looked like a family.

That was the cruel part.

To anyone in the rows behind them, they looked proud.
