Claire Johnson had been a 911 dispatcher long enough to distrust perfect houses.

Not because every quiet street hid something terrible.

Most held ordinary trouble: chest pain, teenage fender-benders, kitchen fires, elderly neighbors who fell and could not reach the phone.

But Claire had learned that the outside of a home rarely told the truth about what happened behind closed doors.

That night in Springfield, Illinois, the dispatch room smelled like burnt coffee, printer toner, and the stale air of people who had been sitting too long under fluorescent lights.

The monitors glowed blue across Claire’s hands.

Her headset pressed warm against one ear.

On another line, somebody was arguing about a noise complaint.

Two desks over, a dispatcher asked for a license plate.

Then Claire’s line clicked open.

“911, what’s your emergency?” she said.

For a second, there was nothing.

Then came a child’s breath.

“I was just a little child,” the girl said.
