The problem was that she never did.

My name is Tom, and I spent thirty years in the Army believing I could tell the difference between a hard truth and a soft lie.

I was wrong about that.

Or maybe I was not wrong.

Maybe I just wanted to be.

Sarah was thirty-two when she disappeared from our ordinary life without ever being called missing.

That is the worst kind of absence, because nobody brings casseroles and nobody starts searches and nobody says the word tragedy out loud.

They just tell you she is busy.

They tell you she needs space.

They tell you she is fine.

And because you are a father trying not to break your wife’s heart, you nod like a fool and let another Sunday pass.

Before all of it, Sarah called every Sunday after church.

She called while Martha cleaned the kitchen and I sat at the table pretending not to listen.

She would ask about my knee first, because she knew I lied about it less when she asked before her mother did.

Then she asked about my tomatoes.

Then she asked whether Martha had over-salted the roast again, and Martha would call across the kitchen, “Tell that girl I heard her.”

Sarah would laugh.

That laugh used to fill our house better than any lamp.
