I was standing in a hotel lobby that smelled like lemon cleaner and burnt coffee, half-listening to the elevator chime, when my phone lit up with her name.

Carolyn was my neighbor in Chicago.

Sixty-four years old.

Retired school librarian.

The kind of woman who brought zucchini bread in August, remembered every kid’s birthday on the block, and complained when people left trash cans at the curb past noon.

She was not dramatic.

She did not call after midnight unless something was truly wrong.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

“What do you mean, blood?”

“Blood on her face,” Carolyn said. “On her arm. On her pajamas. She won’t talk. She won’t move. I tried calling Melissa, but she’s not answering.”
