By the time the black SUV stopped at the gate, Corporal Denton had forgotten he was supposed to be counting.

That was the first honest thing he did all morning.

The contractor in the pickup behind me took his hand off the horn and leaned toward his windshield as if he had accidentally found himself inside a classified briefing.

The rear door of the SUV opened.

A man stepped out in a dark Marine uniform, shoulders square, four stars catching the weak Virginia light.

Nobody announced him.

Nobody had to.

Some people carry rank on their sleeves.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps walked toward us without looking at the rifles, the barrier, or the line of idling vehicles.

His eyes went to the two torn halves of my visitor pass lying near my shoe.

Then they went to Denton.

Then they came to me.

For one second, I saw him try to place my face inside a file older than most of the Marines standing at that gate.

He could not.

That did not surprise me.

The women who keep men alive in ugly places are often remembered as initials, call signs, or voices on a radio.

Faces come later, if they come at all.

“Who destroyed that document?” he asked.

Denton’s back snapped straighter.

“Sir, the visitor presented invalid access paperwork.”

The Commandant did not blink.

“That was not my question.”

The lane went colder.

Denton swallowed.

“I did, sir.”

“Why?”

“It appeared fraudulent, sir.”

The Commandant bent before Denton finished the sentence.

A four-star general in polished shoes crouched on wet pavement and picked up the torn pieces by their clean edges.

He did it carefully.
