Matching napkins were folded beside their plates.

Party favors sat in little pastel bags.

The cake had pink frosting flowers and candles Gloria was still adjusting as if the party photo mattered more than anything else happening in her yard.

Vanessa saw me first.

She was Michael’s sister, Chloe’s mother, and one of those people who could smile while stepping on your foot and make you feel rude for saying ouch.
