The first time I saw the marks on my sister’s back, the world did not go quiet.

It vanished.

One second I was standing inside a bridal boutique with rain tapping the front windows, a forgotten paper cup of coffee cooling beside me, and a seamstress kneeling behind Mara’s dress with a pin cushion strapped to her wrist.

The next second, all I could see was my little sister’s bare back in the mirror.

Fresh dark marks crossed her skin under the ivory satin.

They were not old.

They were not vague.

They were not the kind of marks a woman could explain away with a clumsy fall or a bad doorway.

The boutique smelled like steamed fabric, hairspray, and wet pavement from the customers coming in out of the rain.

A small American flag sticker clung to the glass near the front door, bright and ordinary, as if the world outside still believed this was a normal Thursday afternoon.

Mara stood on the platform beneath a chandelier, wearing the dress Mom had cried over when we picked it.

The gown was beautiful.

My sister looked terrified.

‘Turn around, sweetheart,’ the seamstress had said.

Mara turned because she had always been the good one.

The agreeable one.

The one who apologized when someone else bumped into her cart at the grocery store.

The zipper slid down slowly.

Then the seamstress gasped.

‘Oh my God.’

Mara’s eyes met mine in the mirror, and I watched shame flood her face before pain did.

That was the part that broke something in me.
