The bank called while Heather Wilson’s hands still smelled like hospital soap and adhesive strips.

She was standing outside Room 214 on the pediatric floor, where a seven-year-old named Tyler had been trying not to cry while she changed the gauze on his arm.

The monitor beside his bed kept giving off that soft, steady beep that made hospitals sound calmer than they ever really were.

The hallway was cold enough to raise bumps under her scrub sleeves.

Fluorescent light washed everything pale.

Heather almost ignored the phone vibrating in her pocket.

Nurses learned to do that.

They learned to put their own lives on mute for ten minutes at a time while they handled everybody else’s fear.

But her elderly neighbor had been admitted the night before, and Heather worried it might be about him.

So she stepped into the hallway, pressed the phone to her ear, and answered with the voice she used when families were frightened.

‘Hello, this is Heather.’

The man on the other end introduced himself as Craig Donovan from the bank.

He sounded careful before he even said what he wanted.

‘I’m calling about your missed mortgage payments, Miss Wilson.’

Heather gave a short laugh.

It was not because anything was funny.

It was because impossible news sometimes needed one second to become real.

‘I don’t have a mortgage,’ she said. ‘I rent a one-bedroom apartment.’

There was a pause.

Professional.

Polite.

The kind of pause people used when the truth was already worse than the listener knew.

‘Our records show you took out a mortgage for $623,000 in January,’ Craig said. ‘You are currently three months behind.’

Heather looked down at her sneakers on the hospital floor.
