At exactly six o’clock on a cold Thursday morning, my daughter-in-law started pounding on my front door hard enough to shake the framed photographs in the hallway.

“Evelyn! Open this door!”

Lauren’s voice cut through the gray dawn and across the quiet street like a siren.

Every strike of her fist made the brass chain tremble against the frame.

I stood behind the living room curtains in my robe and slippers, holding the fabric open just wide enough to see her.

The porch light buzzed above her head.

It made her blond hair look almost silver.

She had come without a coat, wearing black leggings, a cream sweater, and the expensive leather boots I had bought her for Christmas two years earlier.
