For a moment, I thought I had misheard her.

The private dining room was warm, full of candlelight and the smell of seared steak, garlic butter, and the kind of expensive red wine I never bought for myself.

The bite of potato on it trembled slightly because my hand had gone still before the rest of me understood why.

Across the table, my daughter-in-law, Lauren, smiled at me.

Not nervously.

Not like someone who had realized she had spoken too harshly.
