A Christmas Eve Call Exposed What Lily’s Parents Tried to Hide-mdue

The first call came at 8:17 p.m. on Christmas Eve, just as Grace Miller was closing the back door of her bakery.

The whole place still smelled like cinnamon rolls, coffee, and warm sugar.

Outside, the wind had turned sharp and mean, the kind of December cold that slides under a coat sleeve and makes your bones feel older than they are.

Grace had flour on one wrist, keys in her hand, and a stack of unsold rolls cooling behind the counter.

She was tired in the ordinary way people are tired on Christmas Eve.

Then her phone buzzed.

She almost let it ring.

Then she saw Lily’s name.

“Aunt Grace?”

The little voice was so quiet Grace barely recognized it.

Grace stopped with the deadbolt half-turned.

“Lily? Sweetheart, why are you whispering?”

Grace moved before she finished thinking.

Her purse came off the hook.

Her coat came off the chair.

The bakery lights stayed on behind her because nothing in her body cared about routine anymore.

“Lock every door,” Grace said. “Go to the hallway closet like we practiced during storms. Do not open the door for anyone except me.”

Lily sniffed hard.

“But they told me not to call you.”

Grace stopped halfway to the parking lot.
