The spoon stopped against the bottom of Norma Mercer’s soup pot with a metallic scrape that sounded too sharp for such a spotless room.

Morning light washed over the marble counter, bright and cold, making every surface look clean enough to accuse somebody.

The kitchen smelled like black coffee, laundry detergent, and chicken soup.

Norma had started the soup before I came downstairs, like always, moving around the kitchen as if the whole house answered to her hands.

Daniel stood in the doorway with one palm against the frame.

He was pretending he had only come in for coffee.
