The call came at 3:07 a.m., when Michael Salgado was asleep in the small home office because the bedroom had stopped feeling like a marriage months before.

The house was quiet enough for him to hear the refrigerator humming from the kitchen.

A porch light glowed through the blinds and laid a pale stripe across the carpet.

His phone vibrated once, then again, scraping against the edge of the desk where he had left it beside a stack of building plans.

He woke with the sharp, heavy confusion that comes when bad news arrives before the mind is ready for language.

“Mr. Salgado?” a woman asked.

“Yes.”

“This is the emergency department. Your wife is here.”

Michael sat up so quickly the blanket fell from his lap.

“What happened?”

“She is conscious,” the nurse said, and that was the first thing that scared him, because people only start with conscious when the rest of the sentence is going to hurt.

“She has injuries to her face and a possible fractured rib. We need you to come in.”

Michael swung his feet to the floor.

“Was she mugged?”

There was a pause.

It was not long, but it was long enough to pull the air out of the room.

“It would be better if you came here, sir.”

Michael dressed in the dark.

He did not turn on the lamp because the kids were asleep down the hall, and some part of him was still trying to keep the night from touching them.

Ethan was fifteen.

Emma was thirteen.

They had learned too much already by listening to doors close carefully and conversations end whenever they walked into the kitchen.

Michael pulled on jeans, a gray T-shirt, and the same work jacket he wore to job sites.

The jacket smelled like concrete dust, lumber, and cold air.
