The phone rang at 2:47 a.m., and before I even saw the screen, my body knew it was bad.

It makes every old fear sit up inside you before your hand even reaches the nightstand.

My bedroom was dark except for the blue glow of the screen.

The radiator clicked in the corner.

Dry leaves scraped across the driveway outside my little ranch house, dragging along the pavement in brittle little bursts.

I saw Ethan’s name, and my chest tightened so hard I had to breathe once before answering.

“Grandma…”

His voice was a whisper.

He was sixteen years old, taller than me now, all elbows and shoulders and teenage silence, but in that one word I heard the little boy who used to run across my porch with a scraped knee and a backpack bigger than his body.

“Ethan?” I said. “Where are you?”

“At the precinct.”

I was sitting up before he finished the sentence.

His breath hitched on the other end.

“Chelsea hit me with a candlestick,” he whispered. “My eyebrow is bleeding. But she told them I shoved her down the stairs. Dad believes her.”

The room went very still around me.

Then he said the words I will never forget.

“Grandma, I’m scared.”

By 2:51 a.m., I was dressed.
