The first thing Grace Miller remembered later was not the fear.

It was the smell of cinnamon rolls cooling in the dark bakery.

Butter and brown sugar still hung in the air when she turned off the front lights and walked toward the back door with her keys in one hand.

Outside, Christmas Eve had gone hard and cold.

The alley behind the shop was glazed with a thin shine of ice, and every breath Grace took seemed to scrape the inside of her chest.

She was thinking about the last order she had sent out, a dozen rolls for a nurse who had apologized for coming in right before closing.

She was thinking about whether she had enough gas to get home without stopping.

Then her phone rang.

The screen showed Lily.

Grace answered before the second ring finished.

“Aunt Grace?”

The voice was so small it barely sounded like a voice.

Grace stopped with her hand still on the deadbolt.

“Lily? Sweetheart, what’s wrong?”

At first, there was only breathing.

Not crying.

Not yet.

Just the awful quiet of a child deciding whether telling the truth would make things worse.

“Mom and Dad left,” Lily whispered.

Grace felt the bakery go still around her.

“What do you mean they left?”

“They said they were going to get gas,” Lily said, and her voice shook on the word gas. “But their suitcases are gone. The house is dark. I can’t find them.”

Grace had known, in the way adults sometimes know and still hope they are wrong, that Mark and Vanessa were colder to Lily than any child deserved.

She had seen Vanessa roll her eyes when Lily cried too quickly.
