By the time the attic ladder folded back into the ceiling, the house felt too clean.

He said those things with a tired little smile, and then he brought home takeout from the places I liked, as if sesame noodles or a deli sandwich could fill in the silence where honesty should have been.

I was thirty-four then, and my job was built around money that did not want to be found.

I followed transfers, shell accounts, hidden ownership, pressure signatures, quiet changes in documents, and polite lies told by people who thought numbers could be intimidated.

Numbers never intimidated me.
