By the time I reached my car, my father’s scream had already changed the shape of the night.

It came through the dining room window in a raw burst, then broke, then came again, higher and uglier than I had ever heard from him.

The porch air felt thick against my skin, warm with cut grass and charcoal smoke from somewhere down the street.

The little American flag by my mother’s mailbox tapped softly against its stick in the evening breeze, absurdly calm while the Parker family dining room came apart behind me.

I stood beside my car with my keys in my hand and did not run.

That surprised me most.

For most of my life, leaving that house had meant escaping it.

That night, leaving meant letting the truth do what I had brought it there to do.

Inside, Ryan shouted, “Dad, what is it?”

Caleb’s chair scraped next.

Lauren said one of the twins’ names in a voice tight enough to hurt.

Mom said, “Give it to me,” and then, softer, “Please.”

Dad screamed again.

Not words.

Just panic.

I knew exactly which page he had reached.

It was not the DNA report.

That part would have wounded his pride, but pride was something my father always knew how to wrap in anger.
