The words came out of Greer Ashford’s mouth before anyone on the landing pad seemed ready to hear them.

The medevac rotors screamed behind her, and the smell of fuel, dust, blood, and hot metal clung to the air.

Colonel Harlan Briggs turned like she had insulted him in front of the whole war.

For one second, nobody moved.

The rifle case sat between them, black and scraped, thrown down after the crash like a piece of evidence.

Greer stood there in a torn uniform, one sleeve ripped at the shoulder, her face streaked with smoke, her hands steady in a way that made no sense to the men watching her.

Briggs took three steps.
