Tyler’s voice cut through the checkpoint before I had even finished handing over my ID.

The morning was cold enough to make the metal badge clip bite through my glove when I touched it.

Diesel fumes drifted from idling trucks, the wind off the water snapped the American flag over the gate, and the scanner at the guard shack kept making that thin electronic chirp that belongs to military mornings and airport counters.

Then he leaned closer and tapped the silver eagle on my collar with two fingers.

“Cute costume,” he said. “Did Amazon ship it overnight?”

The touch was quick.

That did not make it small.
