A heavy brass magazine hit Lieutenant Sarah Jenkins in the chest before she had even been allowed to introduce herself properly.

It was not thrown hard enough to leave a bruise anybody could prove later.

She caught it because her hands had learned faster than her pride ever could.

The sharp edge bit into her palm, and for half a second all she smelled was hot brass, desert dust, and the stale coffee on Major General Arthur Clayton’s breath.

The Nevada sun had already turned the gravel white with heat.

Flags along the firing range snapped hard in the crosswind.

Two hundred soldiers stood behind Clayton, lined along Camp Achilles as if they had been called out for inspection instead of entertainment.

Clayton liked an audience.

Men like him always did.

“You think Washington can force a diversity hire down my throat?” he said.

He did not lower his voice.

He wanted every private, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain to hear him frame her before she got a chance to prove herself.

“This is Camp Achilles, Lieutenant Jenkins,” he said. “We train warfighters here, not political statements.”

Sarah kept the magazine in her palm.

She could have told him that her transfer order had not come from Washington politics.

She could have told him there were names, signatures, routing codes, and sealed references attached to it that outranked his mood.

She did not.

The first rule of surviving men who mistake cruelty for leadership is knowing when their own performance will do half your work for you.

Clayton stepped closer until the brim of his cover almost touched her forehead.

He was older than her by decades, decorated enough to believe his opinions were facts, and powerful enough to make younger officers laugh at jokes they did not find funny.

Sarah had seen that kind of power before.

It did not always shout.

Sometimes it smiled while closing a door.
