The first shot from Elena Volkova’s ruined old rifle did not sound like salvation at first.

It sounded like the sky cracking open above FOB Raven Fall.

Nothing but rock, dust, dead brush, and the burned skeleton of a tree leaning against the pale Afghan sun.

The morning heat made the air shimmer so badly that even trained eyes wanted to look away.

Then Elena’s rifle fired from the observation post.

The man hidden behind the burned tree dropped out of sight.

Two muzzle flashes answered from the northern slope.

Nobody else had seen them.

Nobody else had predicted them.

Nobody else had believed her when she tried to warn them with silence, stillness, and the way her eyes kept returning to the ridge.

Commander Elias Vance stood near the command building with a radio handset in his hand and felt the cold hit his chest before any order formed in his mouth.

Men shouted through red dust.

Radios screamed useless static.

Somewhere near the motor pool, one Marine hit the ground and dragged another behind a tire wall while Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Webb came out of the command building with his weapon raised and his voice flat enough to cut through panic.
