The manila folder arrived after dessert plates had been cleared but before anyone had stopped pretending the evening was warm.

That was the part I remembered later.

Not even Daniel’s hand closing around my knee under the table.

I remembered the timing.

They waited until the room was full, until every chair around the mahogany table had a witness in it, until the candles had burned low enough to make everyone’s face look softer than it really was.

Then Eleanor slid the folder across the table.

The paper made a dry sound against the polished wood.

It stopped beside my plate, inches from a silver fork and a smear of cranberry glaze.

Daniel did not move.

That told me more than the folder did.

He was sitting to my right in the navy sweater I had helped him pick out two weeks earlier, the one he said made him look less like a bank brochure and more like a human being.

His beef wellington was half-eaten.

His wineglass was untouched.

His eyes were on the tablecloth.

Eleanor’s hand stayed on the folder for one extra second, as if she wanted everyone to see where the power was coming from.

She was beautiful in the way expensive women are trained to be beautiful, with every hair smooth, every nail perfect, every gesture measured.

She had never raised her voice to me.

She had never needed to.

From the first dinner, she had made it clear that Daniel’s family was a room I had been allowed into, not a room I belonged in.
