My mom sold the house I inherited from my grandma and said the money would pay off my brother’s vacation debt.

At first, I laughed because I thought she was joking.

The folder was sitting on my mother’s kitchen island, pushed toward me like a bill I was supposed to pay without reading.

The room smelled like lemon cleaner and reheated coffee.

The late afternoon sun came through the blinds in thin bright stripes, cutting across the granite counter and the papers inside that folder.

My brother Brandon sat on the barstool beside her with sunglasses pushed into his hair and his phone in his hand.

My father was in the living room with the television muted.

He had perfected that kind of silence over the years.

The kind where he could hear everything and still pretend he had not been asked to choose.

“Look through it,” my mother said. “Then stop panicking.”

I did not touch the folder at first.

I looked at her.

“You sold Grandma’s house.”

She folded her hands on the island like we were discussing a family budget, not the last thing my grandmother had deliberately left for me.

“The house was just sitting there,” she said. “Your brother needed help.”

Brandon snorted.

“Here we go,” he said. “The historic-house police.”

His black SUV was parked outside, crooked across the walkway.

It was the same SUV he had taken on weekend trips he could not afford, the same one my mother described as necessary because he needed reliability, the same one he called a reward for surviving stress.

Brandon was always surviving something.

A bad job.
