The first thing I noticed was not Victoria’s face.

The podium stood squarely in front of the entrance.

The red ribbon had been stretched tight across the doors.

Programs rested on folding chairs in neat stacks, their corners aligned as if someone had used a ruler.

A brass band waited near the side of the courtyard, instruments shining under the warm Georgia sun.

Officers moved through the crowd in dress uniforms.

Veterans sat in the front rows with canes hooked over their knees.

Local reporters adjusted camera straps and whispered to one another while families gathered beneath the bright flag above the entrance.

It should have felt like an honor to be there.

Instead, I stood at the edge of the courtyard holding a valid invitation and realizing somebody had made room for everyone except me.

For three years, that last name had meant less in my husband’s family than it did on paper.

Victoria Parker never said it that plainly in private, at least not where Daniel could not pretend he had missed it.

She said it in smaller ways.

A holiday table with one chair too few.

A toast that mentioned every Parker child and spouse except me.

A look across the room that told me the ring on my finger had not earned me a place in her mind.
