Sergeant Morales first noticed Emily because she did not move like the other children.

The sidewalk outside the elementary school was full of noise that morning.

Sneakers squeaked on damp concrete.

The flag rope tapped the pole above the front doors, metal against metal, steady as a clock.

The air smelled like wet pavement, cafeteria syrup, and the sharp coffee cooling in the paper cup Morales had left on the school office counter.

He had come for a traffic safety presentation.

At 8:17 a.m., he had signed the visitor sheet in the school office.

His radio log showed a routine campus visit.

A staff member had handed him a badge sticker, pointed him toward the multipurpose room, and joked that second graders asked harder questions than police academy instructors.

Morales had smiled because that was usually true.

Then a little girl stepped away from the gate.

She had two messy braids, a backpack hanging off one shoulder, and a face too still for a child.

She did not tug on his sleeve.

She did not cry.

She waited until he looked directly at her.

“Officer,” she said, “please follow me to my house.”

He lowered himself to one knee so his badge would not be the biggest thing between them.

“What’s your name?”

“Emily.”

“Are you lost, Emily?”

She shook her head.

Her eyes moved toward the school doors, then toward the playground fence, then toward the office windows.

It was the kind of look adults give when they are afraid of being overheard.
