Graduation dinners are supposed to be simple.

That was the lie I repeated as I walked into the restaurant, tugging at the sleeve of my black dress as if fabric could turn into armor.

She said it like a title she had been forced to read.

My father gave me one nod.

Not warm.

Not proud.

My sister sat across from the empty chair with her phone angled toward her lap, hair smooth, thumb scrolling, face lit blue-white by the screen.

She looked up for less than a second.

Then she went back to her phone.

That morning, I had walked across a stage at 10:30 with my used heels pinching my toes and my diploma folder pressed against my ribs like proof I had survived something.

No one from my family came.

My mother said the ceremony would be too crowded.

My father said parking would be impossible.

My sister did not bother with an excuse.

They all said dinner would be more meaningful anyway.

I wanted to believe them because some children keep reaching for warmth long after the stove has burned them.

The waiter came over with a practiced smile.
