She thought she was back at the long table with the glassware shining under soft yellow lights, listening to her team cheer because the promotion had finally gone through.

She had read the words twice on her phone at 10:18 p.m. because she wanted to make sure she had not imagined them.

Her assistant had cried a little.

One of the younger sales reps had hugged her so hard Mariana had almost laughed from exhaustion.

By the time she drove home, the city lights were streaked across her windshield, and her feet ached inside the heels she had worn all day.

She remembered sitting in the driveway for a full minute before going inside.

The porch was quiet.

A small flag across the street moved in the cold wind.

The house looked peaceful in the way houses sometimes do when you are the only person keeping them from falling apart.

Mariana had paid the mortgage on that house for three years.

She had paid the water bill, the electric bill, the phone plan, Daniel’s car payment, and the medical copays Eleanor treated like household air.

She paid quietly.
