The Biker Who Called 911 When a Barefoot Girl Ran to His Harley-ruby

A 6’4 tattooed biker in a worn black leather Hells-Angel-style cut suddenly lifted a small barefoot 5-year-old girl off the cracked asphalt of a Phillips 66 gas station parking lot in Sedalia, Missouri at 4:47 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon in late August — and sat her on the leather seat of his parked Harley with one tattooed arm wrapped around her shoulders.

He did not start the engine.

He did not move the motorcycle.

He picked up his cell phone with his free hand and dialed 911.

I was the dispatcher who answered.

My name is Lorraine Whitaker, and by then I had been wearing a headset for the Pettis County Sheriff’s Department for twenty-six years.

Sometimes they sound like heat buzzing over asphalt.

Sometimes they sound like a grown man trying very hard not to let his voice shake because a child is holding on to his arm like letting go would kill her.

The call came in at 4:48:14 p.m.

On my screen, it looked like every other call until it did not.

The man’s voice was low, controlled, and close to the phone.

“Ma’am, I need deputies and EMS at the Phillips 66,” he said. “I have a child here. Barefoot. Bruises on her arm. Torn shirt. She ran to me and will not let go.”

I asked for the address.

He gave it without hesitation.

I asked whether the child was conscious.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said. “Alert. Nonverbal right now. Scared. Five years old, maybe. Small. She initiated contact with me. I am beside pump three. My motorcycle is parked. Engine is off. I am not leaving.”

That was the first thing that made me sit up straighter.

People in panic rarely think about how they look on camera.

He did.

Not because he was guilty.

Because he understood what strangers might assume.

His name was Beau Hollister, though everyone in his riding circle called him Wraith.
