The first thing Natalie noticed was the smell of orange peel.

Not the sweet kind from a kitchen counter.

The sharp, expensive kind, twisted over champagne glasses by a waiter in a white jacket at Willow Creek Country Club.

It floated above the table with the smell of buttered croissants, hot coffee, polished wood, and faint chlorine from the pool beyond the glass wall.

Sarah sat in the middle of it all like the room had been arranged around her.

Cream blazer.

Pearl earrings.

MBA smile.

A stack of graduation cards rested beside her plate, and her diploma was probably still inside the leather folder in their mother’s SUV, but Sarah had already turned that degree into a coronation.

Their father lifted his mimosa.

“To Sarah,” he said, loud enough for the next table to turn. “The future of the family business.”

Everyone cheered.

Natalie raised her water glass.

It was not the first time she had learned how to disappear politely at a family table.

Sarah looked at her for half a second.

That was all Sarah ever needed.

Half a second to check whether jealousy had slipped onto Natalie’s face.

Natalie gave her the smile she had built over years of family gatherings.

Not warm enough to invite conversation.

Not cold enough to become a scene.

Their mother dabbed under one eye with a folded napkin even though nothing had fallen.

“We’re so proud of you, sweetheart,” she said. “You worked so hard.”

Sarah placed a manicured hand over her chest.

“Thank you, Mom. I couldn’t have done it without all of you.”
