Grandma Opened the Locked Room and Found the Secret Her Son Hid-mdue

I Found My Twelve-Year-Old Granddaughter Doing Homework Locked in the Bathroom, Sitting on the Toilet Lid, with the Door Bolted.

The hallway light was weak and yellow, and the house smelled like laundry soap, toothpaste, and old towels that had been shut in too long.

From inside, I heard the faint scratch of a pencil.

Not crying.

Not whispering.

Homework.

“Emily?” I said.

The scratching stopped.

There was a tiny sound, like a book sliding across fabric, and then my twelve-year-old granddaughter unlocked the door.

She was sitting on the closed toilet lid with her math book balanced on her knees.

Her worksheet was clipped to an old folder, and her pencil had left dark dents where she had pressed too hard.

I looked past her at the sink, the towel rack, the little trash can, and the tile floor where her backpack leaned against the bathtub.

There was nowhere for a child to spread out.

There was nowhere for her elbows.

There was barely room for her knees.

“Sweetheart,” I said, trying to keep my voice even, “why are you doing homework in here?”

She looked down.

“I’m used to it.”

Those four words did something to me that yelling would not have done.
