My sister Ashley made all seven bridesmaids wear lavender gowns.

Soft lavender, flowing satin, matching shoes, matching earrings, matching little bouquets tied with white ribbon.

“It was the only one left,” she said, smiling like the lie was part of the wedding package.

I remember the smell of that hotel suite more than anything.

Roses on the dresser.

Hairspray hanging in the air.

Champagne somebody had opened too early.

Lavender satin rustling every time a bridesmaid crossed the carpet.

My dress made a stiff scratching sound when I pulled it over my shoulders, because it did not fit my body and it was never meant to.

The zipper gaped at my back.

The waist sagged.

The hem brushed the tops of my shoes.

When I stepped out of the bathroom, every lavender bridesmaid turned at once.

Nobody laughed out loud.

That almost made it worse.

Ashley looked me up and down, then adjusted one pearl pin in her hair.

“Just make it work, Brooke,” she said.

I stared at her in the mirror.

“Ashley, this is humiliating.”

Her eyes flicked to mine, cold for half a second before she remembered to look bridal again.
