What Daniel’s Father Revealed at the BBQ Left Jason Speechless-mdue

My mother had been standing at my kitchen counter with a foil-covered casserole in one hand and that same look on her face she used to give me when I was sixteen and thinking about doing something stupid.

If my father saw a star on my shoulder, he would tell half of Georgia before the sun went down.

The promotion had come through at 7:12 a.m. eleven days earlier, and the ceremony at the Pentagon had still felt unreal when they pinned on my first star.

Hickory.

Grease.

Warm rolls.

Sweet tea sweating in mason jars.

It was the kind of backyard that makes people loosen their collars before they even say hello.

Sarah squeezed my hand as we stepped out of the car.

She wore a simple blue dress and the tired, patient smile she saved for family events, which was the same smile she used when my father started telling old stories at the wrong volume.

“You ready?” she asked.

“For barbecue? Absolutely.”

“For Jason,” she said.
