I found my twelve-year-old granddaughter doing homework locked in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet lid with the door latched.

The bathroom fan rattled over her head.

The room smelled like bleach, wet towels, and pencil shavings.

Emily had her notebook balanced on her knees, her socked feet tucked back under the toilet bowl so the door would not hit them if someone came in too fast.

She did not look like a child doing homework.

She looked like a child trying not to take up space.

I told her the dining room table was empty.
