Jenna arrived at her parents’ monthly family dinner in a taxi, and for a few seconds she stood in the driveway pretending that was normal.

The cab’s taillights slid away into the cold evening, leaving a faint smell of exhaust behind the row of cars already parked near the garage.

Her uncle’s BMW sat closest to the walkway.

The house looked exactly the same as it always did on dinner nights.

Soft light glowed behind the curtains.

A small American flag hung near the porch post, barely moving in the wind.

Somewhere inside, there would be wine already poured, china already set, and people already laughing like adulthood was something everyone at that table had figured out except her.

Jenna smoothed the front of her navy dress before she rang the bell.

She had worn it because it was plain and forgiving.

She had smoothed it twice in the taxi because her hands had been trembling since the driver asked if she wanted a receipt.

She did not want a receipt.

She had enough proof already.
